Magische Bilder werden gemeinhin frühen Epochen oder »primitiven« Kulturstufen der Menschheit zugewiesen. Seit der Antike sind Bildbestrafungen bekannt, bei denen die magische Präsenz des Menschen im Kunstwerk angenommen wird. Doch die historischen Bilderstürme haben selbst in unserer aufgeklärten Gegenwart ein faszinierendes Nachleben, etwa in den Attacken auf Denkmäler oder Wahlplakate. Das afrikanische Kultobjekt, das wundertätige Madonnenbild und der Talisman, aber auch das bildliche Substitut eines Rock- oder Filmstars, der im Bild verehrt wird - sie alle stellen die Forschung vor vergleichbare Herausforderungen. Der vorliegende Band untersucht magische Bilder in anthropologischer sowie medialer Perspektive und kommt so der Frage näher zu, was ein Kunstwerk zum magischen Bild macht. English Gothic Misericord Carvings: History from the Bottom Up by Betsy Chunko-Dominguez is the first book to move beyond textual dependence and traditional iconographic analysis when examining misericords. It likewise builds the most thorough discussion to date of the relationship between the misericord’s several potential audiences – including patron, craftsman, occupant of the seat, and modern viewer. Beyond the bounds of misericord studies, there are implications here for study of the relationship between center and margin in late medieval art; and, indeed, what constitutes ‘center’ and ‘margin’ as conceptual realms. Ultimately, this book attempts both to re-integrate the study of misericords into the study of Gothic art in general, and to re-center them in relation to our understanding of late medieval culture.

"Playing While White argues that whiteness matters in sports culture, both on and off the field. Offering critical analysis of athletic stars such as Johnny Manziel, Marshall Henderson, Jordan Spieth, Lance Armstrong, Josh Hamilton, as well as the predominantly white cultures of NASCAR and extreme sports, David Leonard identifies how whiteness is central to the commodification of athletes and the sports they play. Leonard demonstrates that sporting cultures are a key site in the trafficking of racial ideas, narratives, and ideologies. He identifies how white athletes are frequently characterized as intelligent leaders who are presumed innocent of the kinds of transgressions black athletes are often pathologized for. With an analysis of the racial dynamics of sports traditions as varied as football, cycling, hockey, baseball, tennis, snowboarding and soccer, as well the reception and media portrayals of specific white athletes, Leonard examines how and why whiteness matters within sports and what that tells us about race in the twenty-first century United States"--
